The Fallible Gage
I have a friend, (who will remain nameless); he has a 1960 Ford truck that he loves. It be-longed to his father when he was alive. In the spring and fall of the year, he takes “OLD BOB”, (that’s the truck’s name), on a trip while it’s cool and he can roll the windows down and enjoy the ride.
This past week on a trip into the mountains of Arkansas, he was about 500 miles away from home when “OLD BOB” just shut down. There was nothing he could do to get the truck started. If you’ve ever been in that situation, it is certainly disconcerting to say the least. What do I do? Who do I call? How much will it cost? All these questions rush through your mind. In my friend’s case, after paying about $100 to get a tow truck, and about $100 for an auto mechanic to check it out, it was just a matter of putting gas in the gas tank ( now you see why he will remain nameless). But in his defense, while he ran out of gas, his gas gage was showing that “OLD BOB” still had a quarter of a tank of gas.
Of course, I couldn’t help but see a spiritual application in this event. How many people do you suppose are trusting in a “fallible gage”? How many people do you think are being told they’re al-right spiritually, when actually their tank is empty? I do know on the day of judgment there will be some who stand before God, surprised that they are not saved (Matthew 7:21-23)
To avoid such fate, we must trust in the only gage that will never fail and never mis-lead us…the word of God. Friends, please spend time in God’s word so that you can make your calling an election sure.
