SAD CONDITION

Unless you are blind or deaf you are very much aware of two scenarios taking place in the National Football League. One in which a football player knocked his girlfriend out in an eleva-tor and then dragged her out when the door opened. The other incident had to do with a player disciplining his child, which according to some bordered on child abuse. The Psalmist wrote, “The Lord tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence” (Ps. 11:5). Violence isn’t new. Cain became violent and killed his brother Abel because God didn’t accept his sacrifice (Gen. 4). We have seen the beheadings of men in the Middle East by those who are violent. What creates such a situation?

A world without God creates this kind of society. Where God and His word are not exalted, men have no restraint. No doubt these kinds of acts have taken place before and perhaps kept quiet, but in this land in which we live, where every effort is being made to get God out of the lives of society, there is nothing to come but destruction. Hosea wrote, “My people are de-stroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children” (Hos. 4:6).

A world of selfishness creates this kind of society. “Me, myself and I.” “Bow down to me.” The world has lifted athletes up so high that they become very selfish and when they are not bowed to they become violent. Remember the words of Jesus, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the proph-ets” (Matt. 7:12).

A world without love creates this kind of society. Selfishness has its roots in a lack of love. Paul in First Corinthians thirteen gives us a good description of how a person should act when love is present.
A world that does not respect life creates this kind of society. Every day, in the U.S we kill 3,700 babies. Perhaps that explains the mess the NFL is in.
