Can you imagine? “Beyoncé says she did lip sync when she performed the national anthem on Inauguration Day.” So reported all the news agencies. What a bruha! The very idea that this well-known singer would actually lip sync rather than sing it live. She is a Grammy Award winning singer. One news reporter said this, “I think there needs to be a disclaimer,” she asserted. “When you go to see a performance, you go to see someone singing live. Their voice coming out of their mouth.” “This is ridiculous,” she continued. “Let’s lip-sync the whole show. Are you kidding me? It’s not okay!”
I thought, Wow! Why all the fuss? Members of the church do it every Sunday and nobody gets all bent out of shape. For example:
Members sing, “Oh How I Love Jesus” and they are lip syncing. You know they are because when the collection plate comes around they put in a few dollars rather than giving as prospered (1 Cor. 16:1-2). You know they are because they don’t come back on Sunday night or they do something else on Sunday morning and miss worship (Heb. 10:25).
Members sing, “Anywhere With Jesus” and they are lip syncing. You know they are because they won’t attend Bible School or gospel meetings (James 4:17).
Members sing, “Guide Me, Oh Thou Great Jehovah” and they are lip syncing. You know they are because they are guided, not by the Bible, but by the latest trend. They forget the words of David, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my pathway” (Ps. 119:105).Their main desire is for their children to be popular rather than right (Eph. 6:1-4).
Members sing, “Purer In Heart, O God” and they are lip syncing. You know they are because they keep filling their minds with the filth and trash TV has to offer rather than filling their mind with the good things of Christ (Phil. 2:5; Eph. 5:19).
Members sing, “We’ll Work Til Jesus Comes” and they are lip syncing. You know they are because they never lift a finger to do anything for the work of the Lord. Even though Jesus said, “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work” (John 9:4).
One is reminded of the words of the Lord Jesus Christ when he said, “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Mt. 15:8-9).
