Authority

“Authority”

For centuries people believed that Aristotle was right when he said that the heavier an object, the faster it will fall to the earth. Aristotle was regarded as the greatest thinker of all times, and surly he would not be wrong. Anyone, of course, could have taken two objects, one heavier than the other and dropped them from a great height to see whether or not the heavier object landed first. But no one did till nearly 2,000 years after Aristotle’s death. In 1589 Galileo summoned professors to the base of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Then he went to the top and pushed off a ten-pound and a one pound weight. Both landed at the same instant. The power of belief was so strong, however, that the professors denied their eyesight. They continued to say Aristotle was right.

Isn’t that true with people today? Many people today have a preconceived idea about Christianity. When one tries to show them from the Bible what it says about the subject…usually the reply will be, “Well I know what it says. However, I don’t agree with it.”

Many people like the professors, do not have an open mind and are unwilling to accept changes…even if the Bible proves them wrong. Most people are going to believe what they have been taught, regardless of the facts, regardless of what anyone tells them or show them.

Friends, we need to determine the source for our belief. Is our belief based on feelings? Is it based on tradition? Or, is it based on God’s Word.

II Timothy 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
