“GIVE ATTENDANCE TO READING”

“GIVE ATTENDANCE TO READING”

Paul’s admonition to Timothy, “”Till I come, give attendance to reading…” (1 Tim. 4:13). There is no lack of reading material or opportunity to read. Of course we have books, but in addition to that we also have IPhones, IPods, IPads, cell phones etc., all of which have the capability of downloading reading material. I now have the Bible, as many do, on my cell phone. We have Kindle’s that will hold hundreds of books (mine will hold 3500). With all of this technology are we reading more?

Reading reveals truths. The Eunuch riding in his chariot returning to Ethiopia had his IPhone out and was reading (Not really his IPhone) but he was reading and when Philip caught up with him he ask him a question, “Understandest thou what thou readest” (Acts 8:30)? Philip revealed the truth to him. Remember of the Bereans it is written, “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).

Reading gives you information. Five times in Matthew it is recorded that Jesus ask, “Have you not read” (Mt. 12:3; 12:5; 19:4; 21:16; 21:42). In other words it seems to me that Jesus is saying, “You should know this information. Haven’t you read?” Someone once wrote, “A person who doesn’t read isn’t any better off than the person who can’t read.”

Reading helps you understand. Paul to the Ephesians wrote, “Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ” (Eph. 3:4). Paul is saying, “You need to read.”

Read the Bible. It is “…quick and powerful…” (Heb. 4:12).
