A LESSON FOR MARRIAGE

ELDERS CORNER
EDDIE COX

The relationship between Christ and the church and husband and wife is often compared. These are basic ingredients needed for both marriages to flourish.

The first is love. In practical terms, love says, “I ready to forgo my own convenience, to invest my own time, and even to risk my own security to promote another’s satisfaction, security and development.” Christ showed this kind of love for the church in His life, death, and resurrection.

The second is submission. A wife affirms her husband and a husband affirms his wife. Their decisions and judgment reflect consideration and unselfishness. The church surrenders to Christ and surrenders to His Word because of His great love. He has already surrendered to the cross on their behalf. This kind of mutual submission and love frees people to become all that God intends.

Communication is the third need. Openness in marriage allows two people to share their souls, their fears, their resentments, hopes and dreams. It is expressed in gestures, actions, and words. Openness with Christ through prayer and our commitment to each other is essential to the joys we are offered.
